Who else freezes when someone asks, “So… what do you do?”

If this is you, I’ve designed a workshop to help. I’ll guide you to one clear sentence that sounds like you, and to knowing exactly what to say when they ask, “Tell me more.”

Sound familiar?

You’re at a networking event, a church gathering, a neighbor’s party. Someone smiles and asks, “So… what do you do?”

Your mind races. You do a lot of things, and you’re scrambling to pick one. Or you know exactly what you do, but you’re bracing for how it will land.

So you laugh and say, “Well, it’s complicated.” Or you ramble. Or you give the safe answer that doesn’t sound like you at all.

Then you walk away thinking, Why can’t I just say it?

When you say “it’s complicated,” the person in front of you hears, “I don’t have time for this.” That isn’t fair. But it’s what happens, and a conversation that could have become a friendship, a client, or an invitation ends politely.

It’s not you

If you freeze when someone asks, it’s probably because nobody ever showed you how to answer it. You have half a second to decide what to say, and you run out of time. Or you’re braced for the look people give when you name what you do.

And what you were handed didn’t help. The elevator pitch that felt salesy. The script that sounded fake. The clever tagline that never sounded like you.

What works is simpler. Knowing what to say first, and what to save for when they say, “Oh, tell me more.”

That’s what I’m here to help with. I’ll guide you, and together we’ll work out what’s true about you and sounds like you, so you can answer with confidence and without feeling like you’re putting on an act.

Imagine this instead

Someone asks what you do. You answer in one plain sentence. They lean in and say, “Oh, tell me more.” And you know exactly what to say next.

It sounds like you talking, not like a script. And you’re not hiding everything else you do. It just comes out when it fits.

Why I built this

Charlene Fike smiling, resting her chin on her hands

I’m Charlene Fike, a serial entrepreneur for over four decades, running multiple businesses. I’m a both/and thinker, and someone who enjoys helping others craft lives that matter.

I struggled with this question. “It’s complicated” was my go-to answer.

I’ve made my peace with being multidimensional, but I’ve never been able to answer that question with confidence. That’s why I built this.

This works even if…

You do five different things and can’t pick one
You do one thing and dread the reaction when you say it
You’ve never called what you do a business
You hate talking about yourself
You’ve tried to write your “about me” and it sounded fake
Scripts and elevator pitches feel cold and not like you

What happens in the workshop

2:00–2:25
I show you why the freeze happens and how to get past it, with two real examples from my own life
2:25–3:15
You work through a guided set of questions on your own, at your own pace
3:15–3:25
Break
3:25–4:15
Small groups of three: say your answer out loud and hear how it lands
4:15–5:00
Polish your answer, start a version for a second setting, and ask questions

All times Eastern.

What you’ll leave with

One clear sentence for the setting where you usually freeze, in your own words
A few sentences to say next when someone says, “Tell me more”
The skills to craft your answer for different settings, so you’re ready wherever you’re asked
The guided questions, so you can do this again for any room you walk into
The replay, so you can go back over it

What it takes

Choose between Thursday, if midweek suits you better, or a Sunday afternoon. A free AI account, and I’ll walk you through setting it up with a short video before the workshop, so you arrive ready to go. And the willingness to say your answer out loud to two other people, not to the whole room. That’s the whole commitment.

You don’t need a business, a title, or an audience. This isn’t for one company or one field. You bring the setting you care about most: work, church, community, or a business you’re building.

Who this is for

You do several things and can’t fit them into one sentence
You do one thing and dread the reaction when you name it
You have a job, a volunteer role, and something creative you’ve never called a business. All of it counts.

What this is not

It’s not a clever tagline, and it’s not a pitch script to memorize. I won’t hand you a slogan, and I won’t promise you a result. You’ll describe yourself accurately, in ordinary words, so someone can lean in.

Questions

Do I need to be in business?
No. Bring any setting where you get asked what you do.
I’ve tried to write my “about me” before and it sounded fake. Will this?
That’s exactly what the small groups are for. You’ll say it out loud, hear where it sounds stiff, and fix it until it sounds like you talking.
Do I need an AI account?
Yes, a free one works. I’ll walk you through setting it up with a short video before the workshop, so you arrive ready to go.
Will I have to speak in front of everyone?
No. You’ll practice in small groups of three.
Is this only for people in a certain business?
No. It works for anyone, in any field.
Do you guarantee results?
No. I can’t promise how any conversation goes. I can promise you’ll leave with a sentence that sounds like you.
What if I can’t attend live?
Register once and pick either date. If one doesn’t work, switch to the other. Everyone who registers gets the replay.
